Sun Wu Kong (The Monkey King)

Music by Monster, Lyrics by Ashin

Society is constantly in war and upheaval, in 500 years this hasn’t ever changed;
at the base of Huaguo (Flower and Fruit) mountain the sky is filled with beacons of fire
Isn’t humankind tired, still you and I face wars and sieges;
After returning from our journey West to retrieve the scriptures, I wonder if anyone ever actually read them

The Monk sends me a card every year asking how I’ve been doing;
I’m not sure if 500 cards counts as a lot
When I look at those cards I remember that time of battling and strife,
The golden rod that was once so almighty, is now reduced to a stick for digging at ears

I am the great sage, no one can mess with me
But I was not careful and I’ve been defeated by loneliness

If  I’ve got to live, let me live with hope
I’ve never feared loving the wrong person, but I am afraid of never having loved at all
If one day you can return to seek glory once more
Remember to come find me, my good friend

I hear Wu-Jing has already grown enough hair to remedy his bald head,
and has touched upon the idea of marriage with his girlfriend
Ba-Jie, that pig, his cell phone’s never on, with his lascivious nature dominating his life,
it’s as though time hasn’t passed at all for him

The journey to the west is complete and those scriptures acquired,
but the East really ought to have some that still need to be found…
My compatriots, what do you think, let’s go and save the world again

If  I’ve got to live, give me both joy and suffering
I’ve never feared loving the wrong person, but I am afraid of never having loved at all
If one day you can return to seek glory once more
Remember to come find me, my good friend

Remember to come find me, my good friend

Notes: This song is a parody of a piece of Tang Dynasty classic literature, The Journey to the West.  In the original text, the Monk recruits Sun Wu Kong, the mischievous immortal Monkey King; Ba-Jie, who was punished by the gods for his womanizing by being turned into a half-pig, half-man; and Wu-Jing, a former sea god turned man, and the four set off for the West (India) to retrieve a full copy of the Buddhist sutras for the Tang emperor.  The book is about a thousand years old, but it is well-known in Asia.  Ashin's opening about the world not having changed in 500 years is therefore a fine example of his lackadasical attitude toward numbers (it should be 1,000); if there's math involved in the lyrics, he generally gets it wrong... and let's face it, we love him for it.
