Karen - I'm not sure if you'll ever notice this, but if you do - definitely check out the A-yue remake of the old Chyi Chin song, "Yearning is a kind of sickness." He's been winning a lot of awards for it. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79HGMS88Vnc

English lyrics: http://www.onedayinmay.net/Other/Ayue/YearningIsaKindofSickness.html

Great to chat with a fellow Minnesotan! I always will hold out hope of getting some Mandopop act - really, anyone will do - perform at the grandstand at the State Fair. Maybe we could start a campaign. :)

Merry

I must tell you that I ran into this entry as I was hopelessly searching for information on Chinese artist Chyi Chin appearing in Las Vegas. Those links will be a tremendous help-thanks. I too hail from Minnesota, and I do not speak or read a word of Chinese. However, speaking of Deng Li Jun and Chyi Chin, I can sing "Moon Represent My Heart" !!! He has covered several of her songs.

Through circumstances too complicated to describe I became aware of Taiwanese artist Chyi Chin (Qi Qin) and have become hopelessly enamored. I could listen to him sing forever. He of course now makes his home and career on the Mainland. It was quite an undertaking to figure out how to translate. download, and arrange 20 years of albums chronologically so I could get a sense of his music.

I follow Chinese music news using Google translator and was even able to sign up on a Chyi Chin BBS where about four people speak English. I very seldom post because it seems rude to those who don't speak English-but those who replied were astonished to say the least.

My interest in Chyi Chin has led to my listening to many, many other artists, everybody from Cui Jian, Luo Da You, Han Hong, to Zheng Jun. There are some wonderful Cantopop singers, but for some reason once I heard Chyi Chin's perfect diction and crystalline voice I was a goner for Mandopop. He makes the language sound so beautiful. My latest discovery is Wang Feng......

There was some mention of Chyi Chin and possibly his sister Chyi Yu bringing their "Angel and the Wolf" concert to Las Vegas. I have been plotting to hop on a plane in Minneapolis and go see them. I am not well travelled so this would definitely be an adventure. I think you can guess why I enjoyed your post so much.

Are you at all familiar with Chyi Chin? I never look at lyrics from any translation tool because they are 50% gibberish. I only look at good translations into English by a fan and heaven is an English and a Pinyin translation. I know very few lyrics-it seems to be the emotion I listen to. I am confident that either translation tools will improve or a source of good English translations will magically appear at some time in the future.

If you are familiar, do you have an opinion on where he fits in the pantheon? His fans refer to his lyrics as poetry and an awful lot of them are brought to tears by certain songs? He must have something going for him and it doesn't hurt that he is very "shuai".

I didn't mean to write a novel, but I thought the coincidence was too good to pass up.

Best wishes

Jim - I hear that Jackie Cheung gave a good concert, though I admit that after Beyond, I don't listen to much in Cantonese :) For your future planning efforts, there is a handy site for one-stop Asian Concert shopping: http://www.aznconcerts.blogspot.com/ (especially their calendar page: http://aznconcerts.blogspot.com/search/label/Calendar ).

And I do agree: Teresa Teng (Deng Li jun) was absolutely in a class all by herself.

I really enjoy your comments on different groups.

My wife is Chinese and we have been married almost 40 years. We saw Jackie Cheung in LV last year during Chinese New Year and I would like to begin seeing more of the better Chinese singers as they may come to NY, NJ, LV or other places in the US.

How can I begin to keep up with who is coming and when so we can get tickets and plan trips to see them?

You seem to be really plugged into a lot of the information and could be a great help. To both my wife and I, the all time very best ever was Deng Li Jen. We all miss her.

hi, i just happened upon this posting about the fusion 07 concert, and first of all, kudos on the report. i thoroughly enjoyed reading it, but i gotta say that you were pretty critical of all the performances, which may be a fair assessment for some but not all of the acts. i've seen video clips of many of the acts, and considering that the quality of the videos cannot compare to experiencing it live, i still thought the acts were decent, especially given the poor organization of the show and sound equipment.

in particular though, i feel that you were too hard on li yuchun. it seems that you received her performance with such negative preconceived notions about her that you didn't really give her the credit that she deserves. please remember that this was her first time in the US, and the sub-optimal stage conditions (including not having her usual back-up dancers with whom to execute her dance steps) probably just added to her anxiety. now you may say that she should have had enough professionalism like tan weiwei to make the best of the situation, but tan weiwei has more experience since she was already a professional singer when she entered the supergirl contest while li yuchun was only a college music student.

you may have noticed by now that i am acting quite like a fan of li yuchun, and you're mostly right. however, i am not one of those crazy fans who are blinded by their obsession. i know li yuchun is only a mediocre singer, but i like her for the way she executes songs with attitude and her stage presence, not her technical singing skills. besides, her voice is very different (and thus slightly weaker) than those of other pop singers, but i think she is doing well in bringing out her unique sound and is constantly improving. before you mark me as delusional, i'd like to make one final point: i am generally not familiar with chinese & taiwanese singers, so i had never heard of mayday until your report. after watching their performance on video and comparing that to li yuchun's while taking into consideration your assessment of both acts, i feel that both acts were decent given the circumstances, and there is no huge gap in performance quality between the them as mentioned in your report. so maybe your critique is a bit biased, especially since you are a fan of mayday.

last thing, just for your reference, i've posted a link below to a youtube video of another performance of li yuchun's "n+1" (one of the songs she sang at fusion 07), and hopefully that will give you a more accurate idea of her usual performance level (btw, yes, it was pouring during this show):

Oh yeah, the super girls' concert in Taiwan was cancelled. They signed up Tank and 5566 and apparently, even with these two other acts they sold less thyan 1000 tickets. The reason for the cancellation was that the girls didn't get their permits to perform but tickets sales were so dismal right up to the last week before the scheduled date of the performance
