Selling well, apparently

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

According to this, Mayday spends its second week at the top of the charts, with the best-selling album. At 25% of sales, the boys effectively beat out the next closest artist, Stanley Huang (黃立行), who had 14% of the sales. In the week after they released their album, the gap was even more incredible, when they had 42% of album sales and the next best was Elva (蕭亞軒) with 12%.

Mayday also has the number one song for the second week, with “Angel.” Now that I’ve finally (*finally*) received my copy of the album, I have to confess: all of my previous mocking aside, I rather like this song. Even if there are too many songs about angels (hey, at least it’s not rainbows, right? Though come to think of it, Ashin has a song about those too…).

I’ve only listened to the album twice now, but already I like it better than All God’s Children Can Dance (神的孩子都在跳舞) – it seems a bit more polished, and I like the orchestration. So far, my least favorite track is “Offering to Heaven (寵上天)” (a.k.a. “Baby”), which I think in places too closely resembles “Life is Troubled Times (亂世浮水)” and another song I’ve not yet managed to single out. (In related news, I’ve fixed an embarrassing translation mistake on the page for that song – don’t worry, if you’re curious, I did note on the page what it was.) Also, I’m still uncertain about the Mandopop version of “Ode to Joy” (“快樂很偉大”) as well – is it well done? Was it even necessary? I’m not sure. Mostly, I’m excited to see what Globality.org has to say about the album – I can translate the lyrics, but I can’t offer an intelligent opinion on the music, whereas his reviews always do. I’m checking the site a bit obsessively now – I’ve gotten my album now, and we order from the same place….

True to Form

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

Mayday’s Kaohsiung (高雄) concert went off with great success, the fans were delighted, the band played well, and Ashin… forgot the words. Twice. It doesn’t say what song he was singing – one can only hope it wasn’t the new song “Forgotten Words (忘詞)” – but in both cases, the fans laughingly helped him fill in the gaps.

The rest of the band could not help but laugh at him, naturally, then they played through the rest of their songs, so Taiwan’s southern Mayday fans went home happy and satisfied. And probably still laughing. :)

As I noted, the article doesn’t say which songs he forgot the words on, but if I had to guess, I’d say it was “People Life, Ocean Wild, (人生海海)” though I’m basing that only on the words the article says he started to sing before forgetting. [有一天我相信……(忘詞),會不會………根本就不算東西!]

Filming the new MV

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

The boys turned their attention recently to filming the video for “The Most Important Trivial Concern (最重要的小事),” which was composed by Masa. The video involves a partial performance of the Chinese opera “霸王別姬 (Farewell my Concubine)” and the vocal talents of a large group of small children. I’m baffled, to say the least. I have not yet heard the song in question – is there an operatic bridge? A Lennon-esque children’s chorus? Is this a tribue to Leehom and the “chinked-out” efforts? Do the assorted animal print vests and such in the photos have any particular meaning? We must wait and see.

Because the song is Masa’s first formally recorded composition, there is a lot of talk about whether it is dedicated to his rumored girlfriend, Fish Leong – the line about “Still, true happiness is now, quietly helping you carry your Hello Kitty bags” has been suggested to reflect back to how those rumors got started, when Masa and Fish were out shopping together. (Of course, Ashin, not Masa, wrote the lyrics.) Yes, it’s getting old. But until either one of them comes out with a significant other, it won’t stop.

Concert, Album Success

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

The concert was a wild success. This sums up much press on the issue, but 30,000 delighted, screaming fans can’t be wrong. I’m amused by this article, that expresses strong sympathy for the unfortunate Masa because Fish Leong was on the mainland and not at the concert – in spite of their protests, the press continued pushing the two together. It notes that “everyone else” in the band had someone there – Stone and Guanyou had their wives present, Ashin’s long-term, behind-the-curtains girlfriend Dan-dan was there, but poor Masa was on his own. Er, what about Monster? Presumably, he was on his own as well… but there’s no fun gossipy implications to make there, so no mention.

To celebrate, the boys had a party after the concert with their buddies from Champion, the latter of whom have kindly agreed to be the special guests on the subsequent nine concerts. Champion then challenged Mayday to a drinking contest. Conveniently, lightweights Masa and Ashin had “colds” and could not take part, but Stone and Monster were up to the challenge (Guanyou dutifully went straight home after the concert to his wife and daughter). Stone and Monster, however, have alcohol tolerances that far exceed that of any of the members of Champion, and apparently drank the young upstarts under the table.

In album news, at an event in Malaysia, the new album sold out in 15 minutes, disappointing many fans who came long distances or waited in long lines for their chance to buy the album. Fortunately, the record company was able to get in touch with the band, and signed copies will be delivered to fans who ordered the album on site after the copies ran out.

Finally, I will note, with a sigh, that in D.C., the wait for my copy of the album continues.

more big talk from B.i.z

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

俞思遠&B.i.Z  are still putting out all that “they want to take on Mayday”  to compete for the title of “number one heavenly band (第一天團).” The more obvious choice, the article notes, would be for them to work on the other famous mainland band, The Flowers (花ㄦ樂隊), but they are aiming for the top.  Actually, I tried, and failed, to work up the energy to read the whole article, but I was shocked, astounded, and  scandalized  by the opening note that in a  Shanghai  awards ceremony last  month, The Flowers beat out 俞思遠&B.i.Z, F.I.R., the Shin Band, and Mayday for the  “best band” award.

Who the hell (pardon me) was voting on this one?  Look, with the exception of 俞思遠&B.i.Z, I have albums by all of these bands, and I’d pick any one over the Flowers, not out of some sort of  aversion to their music, but out of sheer  disgust at their plagiarism.  Of the album I own,  more than half was ultimately proved to be plagiarized.  Okay, I’m all for second chances, but best band?  Over Mayday?  Heck, over F.I.R. and the Shin Band even (and I’m not famous for my love of either)?  No way.   Maybe they won because they were the only ones to show up?  One never knows.

What did I tell you?

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

Did I not say nearly every Mandopop artist in the world has a song called “Angel” or some such?

Netizens have noticed that there are two song-title simularities between Mayday’s new album and the latest offering from artist Tank:  Mayday has a song called “Angel (天使),” and Tank has a song called “Like an Angel (專屬天使),” then Mayday has a song called “Another First Love (我又初戀了)” and Tank has a song called “The second first love (第二次初戀).”  Officials at the record companies say this is just a coincidence.  I’m sure it is, but that’s what happens when you write songs with the word “Angel” in the title.

In my iPod alone, I have songs called: Angel, Angel of Harlem, Angel of Mercy, Angeleyes, Angels, Angels of the Silences,  Fly to the Angels, 天使, 我的天使, a song called “Angel” in English but sung in Mandarin… you get the picture.  One does not avoid duplication with such a song title, though I’m sure it really is just a coincidence.  The Mayday song “Angel” is apparently at use in an ad campaign.

NT$200,000 for Charity

Monday, January 8th, 2007

Mayday held the first of its “New Song Concerts” on January 6 in Taipei County, Taiwan.  In putting together the concert, Mayday raised NT$200,000 for poor families and children.  The concert was opened by Champion (強辯樂團), then Mayday went on to perform many of the songs off of their new album, but also some old favorities like “Peter and Mary (志明與春嬌)” and “Fool (憨人).”  For an encore, they played crowd-favorite “Tenderness (溫柔).”

The concert was the first of ten that will be held all over Taiwan in honor of the new album – tickets are mostly free, found enclosed in copies of the new album sold in Taiwan.

New Translations Posted

Monday, January 8th, 2007

All Mayday-related, of course.

From Victor Wong, there’s Coax Me to Sleep (哄我入睡)

From Fish Leong, Cola Ring (可樂戒指)

And I’ve finally posted the two Ashin-penned songs from the Migratory Bird soundtrack, Time (年華) and “Left-click” (左鍵). Posting the latter means I’m admitting defeat – I have no idea what “左鍵” means outside the context of computer mouse clicks. Please, please, please – can anyone help?

Done!

Saturday, January 6th, 2007

Well, sortof. The first draft of the Born to Love album translations are done; I’ll put a link on the main page tomorrow, but until then, the index page is here.

I marvel at the inclusion of songs dedicated to the most romantic figure in Twentieth Century communism and the most iconic figure of Twentieth Century capitalism on the same album, lamenting the fact that I don’t think it is an example of intentional irony. Ah well, one can’t have everything. The song “A Thousand Centuries” also combines the evolutionary, Buddhist and Christian origin theories in one, four-minute extravaganza, so perhaps one of the themes of this album is contrast. I *still* haven’t heard it.

New Year’s Concert: Mayday the big earner

Tuesday, January 2nd, 2007

Mayday earned NT$ 4,000,000 (around US $123,000) for their thirty minute performance at the Taipei City New Year’s celebration, beating out some stars that played two or three cities.  There were reports that boyband 5566 earned even more for their performance in Taoyuan County (NT$5,000,000), but some of the managers say those reports are false, though the fee was “quite good.”  Ashin noted of Mayday’s impressive fee that the band has five members, and now a few wives and kids to take care of, so they’ll naturally need a bit more than an act consisting of a single person.

After their performance, Mayday signed autographs – and signed them for about ten hours, until morning came.  (I thought they were doing concerts instead of autograph sessions?)  Some fans had waited in line for three days, and rather than disappoint anyone, they simply signed autographs until they were out of waiting fans.
