A slave to something, anyway

This should be filed under the “真受不了” or “I just can’t stand it” category.

So my sister has become such a Leehom fan in the last few months, she blogs about him, she creates Facebook groups celebrating him, she is apparently occasionally trolling the fan sites for him, and now, it seems, she will buy any product that he endorses. He endorses a lot of products, so this could get really out of control really quickly, but I offer the following as evidence.

My sister mentioned last week that she bought a new cell phone for her US number, the old one having finally given way to the march of time and new technology. I didn’t think that much of it until yesterday, when I was showing her a few teeny-bopper music magazines I bought in Guangzhou last month, knowing that they contained lots of pictures of her current fixation. I was flipping through one to find the section with the bigger pics, when she all of the sudden stopped me on this ad:

Leehom phone ad

“Oh!” she said. “That’s my new phone!”

This by itself would be just an amusing little coincidence, but while browsing through Leehom videos on YouTube, she came across this ad for a Nikon camera… her Nikon camera. I had already noticed, with some suspicion, this other Nikon ad, for the camera that she told me to buy two months ago when my own camera finally died (she’s rather a good photographer, so the whole family takes camera advice from her… and it seems, indirectly from Leehom. My dad just bought a Leehom-endorsed camera on her recommendation this fall as well, though I haven’t broken the news to him yet).

She is a big fan of assorted McDonald’s fare, and of course Leehom is the spokesman for McDonald’s in China. She has gone completely against her upbringing (we’re a Dr. Pepper sort of family) to embrace Coke products… and I think we all know why.

What is unclear to me is whether she is a slave to advertising or, more likely in my mind, just a slave to Leehom. She claims it is all coincidental, but I don’t believe her. Not in the face of such gripping evidence. Though I admit I am a little worried about what will happen when she gets wind of the Yamaha motorcycle endorsement

Er, your dad didn’t buy any camera. Actually, your *mom* bought a camera for your dad, and it turns out to be the one Leehom endorses. Of course, what do you expect, given that your mom went to Connecticut for the weekend just to catch a Leehom show?

If you see your mother on a Yamaha next spring….

Ha! That would make a great comedy. I don’t go for endorsed products that much, although there was that time I flew EVA. (Excellent airline, anyway.) The thing is, these stars aren’t even very loyal to the brands they endorse. On the other hand, a Mayday Visa card ……

Of course your sister is obsessing about him – he’s hot! When I was a bit younger I had my personal fave to obsess about. Now I’ve just got my major love, but I remember….
