Ladies and gentlemen, here we go. Mayday will soon embark on their latest large-scale concert tour, called the “DNA Mayday-Made Concert (DNA五月天创造演唱会).” It kicks off in Hong Kong May 20th and 21st, and continues in Singapore August 29, with only the Shanghai dates (July 3rd and 4th…grrrrr) settled for the mainland so far. (Okay, the Singapore concert, at least, will probably be old news for Singaporeans, but for the rest of us who aren’t going to Singapore anyway, it is purely informational.)
Mayday explained that DNA is the basic building-block of life, just as from one fan to the worldwide 300,000 fans, each fan at each show has become a vital part of what Mayday ia now. Then, of course, DNA backwards is AND – which represents all the concert attendance records over the years, which were themselves made by fan after fan.
Seems a little, um, elaborate for a concert tour title, but oh well. DNA it is. There’s a poster here.
So there is a fear in the industry that Mayday’s free concert ticket with purchase of an album promotion that allowed them to top the sales charts in Taiwan last year would backfire, and lead to fans expecting free concerts and being unwilling to pay for tickets. (Okay, I don’t buy that this is a real fear and not just a journalistic talking point. Who could seriously think that?) Well actually, Mayday’s label says that the opposite is true: that campus concerts bring fans closer to the bands, bring a lot of fans to make their first album purchase, and actually feeds excitement for the large-scale concerts.
Now, one more DNA tour development: on the list of locations that the band plans to visit on this tour is Australia. There’s bound to be some long-suffering fans there excited to see them live!
In other concert news, Ashin writes on his blog that the band is holding a “Mayday and Friends” concert in Taipei on March 29, and this is the one that we will all cry to be missing. That’s because the “friends” include 1976 and Tizzy Bac (*sob*), along with “Magic Power,” Won Fu, Champion, 831, the Chairmen, Orient Express, and (um) Cosmic Men? (宇宙人). Okay, that sounds fantastic, but of course I’m heading to Taipei on April 4. As in, a week later. Seriously, the universe and Mayday together plot against me.
Okay, this next bit of news comes at the perfect time, because I’m actually preparing a lecture on the history of baseball tonight and was only taking a little break to catch up on all the news.
Mayday filmed a commercial advertising the start of the Taiwan professional baseball season recently, grabbing their gloves and bats and taking the field. Though devoted baseball fans, they spend a lot of time indoors and weren’t that athletic to start with, so in short order Monster had hurt his waist and Guanyou his head, leaving the spectators laughing. While out filming, they affirmed their plan to continue with their campus concert tour (which they’d stopped over Chinese New Year). Upon hearing the news that Jolin Tsai is using a similar kind of tour to sell her new album, the band expressed no concern about competition, laughing that there were two things that Jolin could undeniably do better: dress up in sexy outfits and dance. If the boys in Mayday tried to put on ballerina tutus, so one would want to look at them – just look at the whole Guanyou thing. (I dunno… I remember Guanyou’s Swan Lake performance as having a solid audience and a long afterlife online.)
So how do you play baseball with five people? Well, Mayday’s method was to have one pitcher and four batters; pitcher Guanyou would throw the ball, then the other four would hit it as far as they could and then watch poor Guanyou going running after it. Guanyou claimed to be a kind-hearted pitcher who intentionally threw the ball right into the hands and bats of the batters, but the batters weren’t having it. More pictures here.
In other news, mainland singer Kym (金莎) (yeah, I’ve never heard of her before, but apparently she’s put out three albums in the last four years) celebrated her birthday recently with a fan meet-up, and the media asked her what kind of boyfriend she’s looking for. Her answer? Someone just like Mayday’s Ashin. She says that although she seems very demure, in reality she loves energetic, passionate people; moreover, Ashin has talent and amazing composing skills, all of which add to her crush. Well, I dare say she is not alone on this one.
You know that JJ Lin song “期待你的爱”? The girl in it is Kym. I think she’s worked with JJ more before.
MandoPop fans in Australia have a lot to look forward to. At least everyone is considerate enough to plot against you. I just get ignored.
I need to spam all the Chinese fansites for all of my favorite artists with “Come to Charlotte” in Chinese or change that into my signature with different variations for each singer/band.
Haha, yes – I saw Cowboy Jay is planning a stop in Oz as well.
Good luck with Charlotte, though – my guess is that is going to be a pretty tough sell! My complaint is that I’ve proven my willingness to travel reasonably vast distances, and they *still* don’t schedule concerts for times I can work it out.
adding one more show in singapore 8/28
mayday never have shows in america in the east coast =’[
Oh, I’m very willing, but I have other problems in my way. If Mayday or Jay or LeeHom (or sodagreen or Fusion or Peng Tan, since I’m dreaming) came as close as Atlanta, I would have a better chance of going.
BTW, where can I a video of Guanyou performing “Swan Lake”? It sounds really funny!
A.N.D. — very clever!
But oh, what is to be done about Masa’s hair?!
噢買尬 O_O

did i read wrong? ahhhhhhh is this confirmed yet?!!
merry, are u goin to this?
http://www.spring-wave.com/about.php
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh… no. I’m landing in Taipei late afternoon on the 4th. Okay, this is going to be just like the time I sat having a leisurely picnic in Da-an Park completely oblivious to the fact that Mayday was performing at Ximending….
i think Kym also did a song with JJ called 发现爱 on one of his older albums.
do you know if the band is performing in los angeles? i really hope so. last time they did was amazing!!
I wish I could see the concert, I will have my summer holiday, it will start on 20 June and will end on 19 July, I have booked a ticket to Taiwan, and I will spend those days in Taiwan, not Shanghai! =(
Oh yes, 我心中尚未崩壞的地方 MV has been on Youtube, there is only one video, and it hasn’t been clear enough.
The news said that the World tour will also extend to US/Canada and even Europe. I am not sure how true that is but that will be great news for us.

hey does anyone know when the sales of tickets for mayday’s added performance in spore will start? and when’s the added performance?
I can’t believe I have never come across your blog! (*Is ashamed*-_-;) But it’s never too late to discover new things, especially something as great as this blog! With English as my first language and the Chinese language level of a primary school-er, (Those gruesome years of Saturday language school finally paid off!) having to read up on Mayday news can be quite a chore when it’s in Chinese, so a big THANK YOU for posting this blog!(=
And yes, it has been a tiresome wait for us Aussies. For me it’s been a long 6 years, but the wait is worth it! I just got my tickets Thursday and so the countdown begins! 40 days to go! (ie, for the Melbourne Concert!)
Hey merry!
i wrote to you a couple years back about wanting to learn chinese and my obsession with Mayday
well I’m in college now, and I’m taking a chinese course in the summer, but do u by any chance know if mayday is gonna stop by in the US? hopefully Los Angeles, CA?
Hi Lisa! There’s no news yet, so North America might end up on the 2010 end of the tour. But once I hear anything, I’ll post it!
since they were in the us for jump and final home… hoping they will come for dna…. why didn’t i discover mayday earlier?!?
